Bad bar mitzvah jokes go mainstream

Last weekend the “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update segment featured one of our favorite characters by cast member Vanessa Bayer, who turns in a ridiculously spot-on impersonation of the young Jewish boy (Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy) who is overly rehearsed in life because of his bar mitzvah studies. Jacob is invited to tell the story of Hanukkah.

“That’s great, but you don’t have to give a speech like it’s your bar mitzvah. We can just talk,” says Weekend Update host Seth Meyers.

In response to host Meyer’s question on whether Jacob likes the Yankees, “Seth, have you seen my kippot?”

The way that Jacob repeatedly turns to his pre-scripted speech (and tame digs at his parents) for his responses is unfortunately hilariously dead-on. In 2012, humor about Jewish culture makes one of the best SNL skits in a long time.
